If you own a Ledger Nano S, at some point or the other, you will need to learn to transfer Ethereum using the device.

Ethereum, without a doubt, is the most popular altcoin in the market and is also one of the most expensive to buy today. Hence, it is only logical to keep it in a secure hardware wallet like Ledger Nano S.

Many believe that transferring ETH in and out of Ledger Nano S is cumbersome, but that is not the case.

Therefore, in this tutorial, I will share with you exactly how you can transfer Ethereum from a Ledger Nano S to another ETH address.

Step 1: Launch the Ledger Wallet Ethereum application on your device.

Step 2: Plug in the Ledger Nano S to your device (PC/mobile) and unlock it using your PIN code. Remember: Don't share this PIN with anyone because using this PIN, anyone can get into your Ledger Nano S if they have access to the hardware device.

Step 3: After you have entered your correct PIN, the Ledger wallet's Ethereum app will be activated and will prompt you to select between 'ETH' and 'ETC'. Select 'ETH' here. Note: If the app isn't working fine, please check if your browser support on Ethereum application of your Nano S is disabled. You should select 'No' there.

Step 4: After clicking 'ETH', you will be taken to your Ethereum wallet after a few seconds of synchronization.

Step 5: After the synchronization is complete, you will be able to see this home screen of your wallet. Here, you will see your ETH balance and the last transaction details. You will also see 'send' & 'receive' options here.

Step 6: Click on the 'Send' option as shown in the image below.

Step 7: Enter the relevant details like receipt address, gas limit, and gas price here. Always enter receipt address very carefully because if this goes wrong, you will lose your ETH. You can also use the QR code scan facility to avoid manual errors.

Note: Sometimes the transactions fail due "out of gas" error. In such a scenario, you need to enable advanced settings as shown below and put a valid gas limit and gas price.

Step 8: After you receive a message like this on the Ethereum block explorer "out of gas", click on 'Advanced Mode' as shown in the image above to enable gas fields to add custom gas data points. I will tell you further in the article how you can select the right gas. In the advanced mode, the same screen will look something like this:

Step 9: Now that you have filled all the fields appropriately as shown in the image below, you are good to hit 'send' and your transaction will be broadcasted to the Ethereum mempool to be mined.

Some More Important Points…

Now that your transaction is broadcasted, you should check it out at Ethereum explorer and wait for 12 confirmations to get the transaction successful as suggested by Vitalik Buterin. Most of the times, it hardly takes a few minutes to complete those transactions. Here is how you can check your transaction on Etherscan.io.
