Add A Custom Token In MetaMask

Let us just say what Google Chrome is to the internet, MetaMask is to Ethereum blockchain.

MetaMask is a popular browser-cum-wallet to access Ethereum blockchain through which you can manage all your ERC20 tokens as well as Ether (ETH).

It not only enables you to store, send, receive Ethereum and other ERC20, but also allows you to access Ethereum's DApps.

There is more. The design and logo combination is so intuitive, it actually entices you to use it. Here is a short video showcasing how MetaMask works.

However, when it comes to managing ERC20 tokens on MetaMask, many face difficulty because they don't know how to use it properly.

And the most common problem they encounter is the 'inability to see tokens in MetaMask'. This is because they don't know that MetaMask doesn't support ERC20 token by default. Instead, one needs to manually add custom tokens to MetaMask to see them in MetaMask.

Let us learn how to do that right away.

Adding Custom Token To MetaMask

In this DIY tutorial of adding ERC20 custom tokens to MetaMask, I will tell you the step-by-step process for adding custom tokens to MetaMask.

To begin with:

#1. Open & Login To MetaMask

#2. Go To "Tokens" tab after you have logged in as shown below.

#3. Click on "Add Token" as shown in the above image to see the token detail form.

#4. Now that you have reached so far, I will tell you how to fetch these details for your token that you want to add into MetaMask.

  • Token Symbol
  • Token Decimals
  • Token Contract Address

#5. Let us say, for example, you want to add Binance token (BNB) into MetaMask. For this, I will go to Etherscan.io and find out BNB in the token list.

Etherscan

#6. Now, you can see BNB easily but if you are not able to find the token, you can search it by its name as shown below.

Etherscan BNB

#7. Click on "BNB" to see the token details of "BNB" as shown below. Now you can easily extract the contract address, decimals, and symbol for that particular token such as:

  • Token Symbol: BNB
  • Token Decimals: 18
  • Token Contract Address: 0xB8c77482e45F1F44dE1745F52C74426C631bDD52

Contract address, decimals, and symbol

#8. Now add these token details that you extracted in the above step in MetaMask and click on "Add".

#9. Once you hit "Add", you will be able to see the balance amount of BNB and BNB will be added to MetaMask. Similarly add any ERC20 token to MetaMask anytime.

Conclusion

You see how easy and straightforward it is to add custom tokens to MetaMask, but people still get stuck sometimes.

Moreover, MetaMask is a good self-hosted wallet for storing Ether and Ethereum-based tokens so I think you should master this process to be able to store your ERC20 tokens safely. Another breed of ERC tokens that are breaking the dawn and in the future (ERC223), will also be added to Ethereum wallets in a similar manner.

Lastly, I hope this helps you with your problem of not being able to see your tokens in MetaMask. Please check once again before panicking because it might be because your token is not added in MetMask by default.

Now you tell us: How are you storing your ERC20 tokens? Have you faced the similar problem of not being able to see your tokens in MetaMask even after transactions are confirmed on the blockchain?
